WHO: Anna Thorsen (Anna T Fabulous)
WHAT: Creative Director of By Post Street Apparel, Inc
WHERE: Vancouver, CanadaYou just re-launched your company’s website. Tell us about By Post Street
By Post Street is a unisex basic apparel company. We create clothing featuring limited edition portrait artwork of fashion industry personalities by our in-house artist (and my Mother) Kat Thorsen.
Your mum is an incredible artist. What is your process of creating the collections together?
I design basic clothing from scratch: the t-shirt, the sweatshirt, the tank top. However, my pieces feature unique elements inspired by a combination of luxury and sports-wear feature, thus creating ‘the perfect basic piece’ which works for every body at anytime of year. Our apparel is sex-less and season-less.
Each collection features two people that compliment each other. Decisions on who we feature are based on the current trends or events in the fashion industry of time of year the collection is released (Fashion Weeks, Met Gala, beauty trends).
What is the latest collection about?
With our re-launch this month we are releasing two Collections at once. Collection 3 features models Ricki Hall & Cara Delevingne (The Beard & The Brows) to touch on the current thick eyebrow and massive beard beauty trends for men & women.
Collection 4 features Anna Dello Russo & Miroslava Duma (The Fashion Maniac & The Fashion Icon) to represent the two categories of personal style and to touch on all the street style recently seen throughout Spring 2014 fashion shows in September.
You lived in San Francisco for a few years, and continue to go back. You even have a tattoo of the Golden Gate Bridge. What do you love so much about the city of San Francisco?
I was very fortunate to be able to move to San Francisco in 2009 at the hands of the company I used to work for (Aritzia). Little did I know how profound of a mark this move was going to make on my life. I met the loves of my life there: my best friend and soul mate Joseph, a deep love for a physical city, a love for all the people who live there and a love for myself.
San Francisco marked the beginning of my real transformation into the woman I am supposed to be for this world. The ‘Post Street’ in our company name comes from the first street I lived on in San Francisco in the Tenderloin District, and the ‘By’ signifies the collaboration between my mother and I.
In addition, almost all of my creative heroes have a personal connection to San Francisco, from Frida Kahlo to Charles Bukowski to the obvious Harvey Milk. I have yet to meet a person who says they don’t like San Francisco.
What is your favorite part about the career you’ve chosen?
The freedom. At this point in life, anything is possible and I have come to realize that that feeling of ‘being able to do anything’ is never going to go away as long as I stay true to my self and my word! It’s amazing.
What has been the biggest high light of your career so far?
The fact that I am the Creative Director of my own incorporated company because I choose to do so.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about taking the leap in starting his or her own business?
Just do it. Don’t over think it. You don’t need the answers first. Keep going. Ask questions. You’re not alone. Trust yourself. You’ll land on your feet, I promise.
